What Is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is Apple's personal intelligence system, introduced in iOS 18.1. It's a suite of AI-powered features built directly into iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Unlike cloud-dependent AI tools, Apple Intelligence is designed to run primarily on-device, meaning your data stays on your hardware rather than being sent to a server.

Where more complex tasks require cloud processing, Apple uses what it calls Private Cloud Compute — a system designed so that even Apple cannot access the data sent to its servers.

Key Features of Apple Intelligence

Writing Tools

Apple Intelligence adds a Writing Tools menu to almost any text field across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. You can:

  • Proofread and correct grammar and spelling.
  • Rewrite text in different tones (Professional, Friendly, Concise).
  • Summarize long blocks of text.

These tools work in Mail, Notes, Messages, Pages, and most third-party apps that use standard text fields.

Smarter Siri

Apple Intelligence brings a significant Siri upgrade. Siri gains awareness of your personal context — your emails, calendar events, messages, and files — allowing for more useful, specific responses. It can also take actions within apps on your behalf, like finding a specific photo, pulling up a reservation from your email, or editing a document.

Image Playground and Genmoji

A new Image Playground app lets you generate stylized images in Sketch, Illustration, or Animation styles. Genmoji lets you create custom emoji from a text description or even a person's face from your photo library.

Notification Summaries

Apple Intelligence can summarize batches of notifications from apps like Messages and Mail, showing you a one-line digest rather than a stack of individual alerts. This is especially useful for group chats and newsletters.

Smart Reply in Messages and Mail

The system suggests contextually relevant reply options in both Messages and Mail, going beyond simple yes/no responses to offer more complete drafted replies based on the conversation history.

Photos Enhancements

The Photos app gains AI-powered search (describe a photo in natural language and it finds it), a Clean Up tool to remove unwanted objects from images, and automatically generated Memory movies based on topics you request.

Which Devices Support Apple Intelligence?

Device Supported Models
iPhone iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 lineup
iPad iPad Pro with M1 chip or later, iPad Air with M1 chip or later
Mac Any Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later)

Apple Intelligence requires devices with sufficient on-chip processing power, which is why older iPhones — including the iPhone 15 standard models — are not supported.

How to Enable Apple Intelligence

  1. Ensure your device is running iOS 18.1 or later.
  2. Go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  3. Tap Turn On Apple Intelligence and follow the prompts.
  4. Some features may require a brief download after enabling.

Should You Use It?

Apple Intelligence is opt-in and privacy-focused by design. If you own a supported device, it's worth enabling — the Writing Tools alone save meaningful time, and the smarter Siri features improve with regular use. Features will continue expanding through future iOS updates.
